A small community of Catholics who chose the town of Gardner as their new home founded Sacred Heart Parish in 1874. Decades of economic struggle coupled with an intense faith inspired them to make the dream of their own house of worship, a reality. The spire of the new church was a symbol of hope and what can happen if you put your trust in God. It sustained the immigrant community throughout its early history.
In 1922, another dream of the community was realized and so a parochial school was built on land that was purchased from the estate of Miss Helen Heywood. The red brick stable was remodeled as an eight room school house, under the direction of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

A new building was constructed in 1962, updating the old facility. In 1980 the old school was demolished. In response to the need of the school community, the school expanded to include a 7th and 8th grade, a computer lab, a science lab and a library.
For over 85 years, Sacred Heart School has served the educational and spiritual needs of the Parish community. In the future, we will continue to provide a quality education in the Catholic tradition.
